Lakeshore at a glance

Lakeshore is the largest and most populous municipality in Essex County, on the shore of Lake St. Clair. It was formed in 1999 from the town of Belle River and the townships of Maidstone, Rochester, Tilbury North and Tilbury West.

What that means for your heating

Most of Lakeshore is rural farmland, and many farm homes heat with propane or have shops with their own heaters. Keep propane topped up before winter, and have shop heaters checked each fall; see tune-ups.

Lake and wind

Homes along Lake St. Clair face wind and damp air off the water. Outdoor units near the shore benefit from a raised pad and regular rinsing.

Rivers and French farms

The Huron and Wyandot lived along the lake and the Puce, Belle and Ruscom rivers before French families tied to Fort Detroit began farming here in the 18th century. The lakeshore and river lots were first surveyed in 1793 by Patrick McKniff, and today soybeans and winter wheat cover much of the land, with the Comber Wind Farm on the horizon. Old farmhouses often have systems added piece by piece, which a replacement plan can tidy up.
