Heat Pumps in Canada's Warmest Corner
Windsor has the warmest climate of any Ontario city. That gives heat pumps an edge here over colder parts of Canada.
Request an HVAC technicianMore heating days covered
With milder winters, a heat pump can handle a larger share of the heating season before a furnace or backup heat is needed.
Hybrid setups
Pairing a heat pump with a gas furnace is common. The thermostat switches between them based on outdoor temperature.
Summer cooling
The same unit cools all summer, replacing a separate air conditioner.
Defrost
On cold, damp days the outdoor unit may stop to defrost and give off steam. That's normal.

Placement
Raise the outdoor unit above snow and away from roof run-off.
Electrical panel
Older homes may need an electrical upgrade.
Programs
Check current government and utility programs before buying.
Questions to ask
How cold can this model heat at full output? How will it work with my furnace?

How it works
A heat pump moves heat rather than making it. In summer it pulls heat out of the house like central air; in winter a reversing valve sends heat the other way, pulling warmth in from the outdoor air.
Running costs
Savings depend on electricity and gas rates and where the switch-over point is set in a hybrid system. Ask the contractor to explain both.
Noise
Modern outdoor units are fairly quiet, but placement still matters near bedrooms and close property lines.
Upkeep
Change filters regularly, keep the outdoor unit clear of snow and leaves, and book a yearly check of refrigerant and controls.
