Staying Comfortable in a Humid Windsor Summer
Windsor's summers are among the hottest and most humid in Canada. Managing moisture is just as important as lowering the temperature.
Request an HVAC technicianFan on auto
With the fan set to auto, water on the AC coil drains away between cycles. With it on constantly, some of that moisture blows back into the house.
Right-sized AC
An oversized air conditioner cools quickly and shuts off before removing much moisture, leaving rooms cool but clammy.
Basement dehumidifier
Basements stay cool and damp in summer. A dehumidifier set to a moderate level prevents musty smells and mould.
Keep windows closed
On humid days, opening windows lets in moisture that the AC then has to remove.
Block the sun
Close blinds on south and west windows during the afternoon to cut the cooling load.
Exhaust fans
Run bathroom fans during and after showers and the range hood while cooking.
Clean the coil
A clean outdoor coil helps the AC keep up on the hottest days.
Watch for warning signs
Condensation on ducts or windows, musty closets and mildew in bathrooms mean humidity is too high.

Measure it
A simple hygrometer shows indoor humidity at a glance. If it stays high after the AC has run for hours, call in a technician to check sizing and airflow.
Plants and laundry
Drying laundry indoors and lots of houseplants add moisture. In a humid summer, dry clothes outside or in a vented dryer.
Ducts in hot spaces
Ducts in a hot attic or damp crawl space can pull in humid air through gaps. Sealing them reduces the moisture the AC has to remove.
