Heating and Cooling Older Windsor Homes
Windsor-Essex has some of Ontario's oldest neighbourhoods. Older homes bring charm and some heating and cooling challenges.
Request an HVAC technicianRadiators and boilers
Many older homes still heat with hot water radiators. They're comfortable but don't provide cooling.
Adding cooling
Ductless mini-splits add cooling without ducts, keeping walls and trim intact.
Drafts
Older windows and doors leak air. Weatherstripping and storm windows help comfort in both seasons.
Tall rooms
High ceilings put heat at the top of the room. Ceiling fans on low in winter push it back down.
Old venting
Older gas appliances and chimneys need regular checks for safe venting.
Upstairs heat
Upper floors in old homes often overheat in summer. A head upstairs helps.
Electrical
Older wiring may need upgrades before adding equipment.
Plan in stages
You don't have to change everything at once; start with the rooms that matter most.

Boiler care
Boilers last a long time, but they need yearly checks of pressure, relief valves, pumps and venting. Bleed radiators that stay cool at the top.
Insulation
Adding insulation to attics and walls, where possible, makes the biggest difference in old homes. Older walls may have little or none.
Window units
Window air conditioners are common in old homes but block light and leak air. Ductless heads are quieter and more efficient.
Heritage rules
Some heritage areas have rules about changes to the outside of a home. Check before placing outdoor units on a street-facing wall.
Safety first
Old gas appliances, chimneys and wiring all deserve a professional look before you add new equipment. Carbon monoxide alarms near bedrooms are essential.
